In-Depth Review of Maker's Mark Cask Strength Bourbon Batch 22-02 The History Behind the Whiskey Maker's Mark, founded by Bill Samuels Sr. in Loretto, Kentucky, in 1953, is a distillery with a story as smooth as its whiskey. Bill Sr. set out to create a bourbon that was approachable and easy to drink, breaking away from the harsh, rye-heavy bourbons of the time. He famously burned the family’s 170-year-old recipe and started fresh, opting for a mash bill that replaced rye with soft red winter wheat, which gave Maker’s Mark its signature smoothness. The distillery is known for its meticulous, hands-on approach. Every bottle is still hand-dipped in that iconic red wax, a tradition that started with Bill Sr.'s wife, Margie Samuels, who also designed the bottle’s distinctive label and shape. The Samuels family still owns Maker’s Mark, and their commitment to quality and tradition remains unwavering. The Cask Strength variant takes the original Maker's Mark recipe and bottles it without any dilution, straight from the barrel. This is as close as you can get to tasting bourbon straight from the cask at the distillery. The proof can vary from batch to batch, usually hovering between 108 and 114 proof, but it always delivers a robust, flavorful experience that showcases the rich, sweet, and spicy profile Maker’s Mark is known for. Nose As soon as you crack open the bottle, the aromas come out swinging. There’s a rich bouquet of caramel, vanilla, and oak—basically a dessert in a glass. A little swirl brings out a dash of cinnamon spice and a hint of dark fruit, like cherries or plums. It’s warm and inviting, with a nose that promises a punch of flavor. Palate And boy, does it deliver. The first sip greets you with that classic Maker's Mark sweetness—think caramelized sugar and vanilla cream—but this one’s turned up to eleven. The wheat in the mash bill keeps it smooth and round, but the cask strength adds a bold intensity. There’s a nice wave of spice, too, with cinnamon and a bit of pepper, balanced by rich oak and a touch of dark chocolate. It’s like biting into a spiced caramel candy, if that candy had a fiery kick. Finish The finish is long, warm, and satisfying. That spice lingers, along with a comforting vanilla oakiness that doesn’t quit. There’s a slight nuttiness that sneaks in at the end, like toasted almonds. It’s the kind of finish that makes you want to sit back and savor it—no rush, just let it unfold. Feel The mouthfeel is rich and velvety, coating the palate with a smooth, luxurious texture. It’s full-bodied without being overwhelming, leaving a warm, satisfying presence that lingers. Overall Fool Proof Rating: 87%. Maker's Mark Cask Strength takes everything you love about the original and cranks it up. It’s rich, complex, and packs a deliciously spicy punch without sacrificing that trademark smoothness. A must-try for fans of high-proof bourbons. In-Depth Review of Wild Turkey Master’s Keep Voyage Rum Finished Bourbon Wild Turkey, one of the most iconic names in bourbon, has a knack for pushing the boundaries of whiskey innovation. Their *Master’s Keep* series, known for its limited releases and experimental batches, is a treasure trove for collectors and enthusiasts alike. The latest gem in the series, *Wild Turkey Master’s Keep Voyage*, takes inspiration from an unusual source—the world of rum. Yes, you heard that right. This bourbon is all about blending the heritage of Kentucky whiskey with the tropical allure of Jamaican rum casks. But before we dive into the taste and feel of this rare release, let’s take a look at the history behind Wild Turkey and how they ended up sailing into uncharted waters with *Voyage*. A Legacy of Tradition and Innovation Wild Turkey’s story stretches back to 1940 when distillery executive Thomas McCarthy took some whiskey on a wild turkey hunting trip. His friends loved the bourbon so much they started asking for “Wild Turkey bourbon,” and thus, a legend was born. Located in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, Wild Turkey is known for sticking to tradition while never shying away from innovation. In recent years, under the stewardship of Master Distiller Jimmy Russell and his son, Eddie, Wild Turkey has blended its time-honored practices with fresh, creative takes on bourbon. Enter the *Master’s Keep* series, which debuted in 2015 as a way to release unique, high-end expressions. From extra-aged bourbons to rare finishes, this collection has become a hallmark of the brand's willingness to experiment. Voyage is their latest offering, taking a 10-year-old Kentucky bourbon and finishing it in Jamaican rum casks. Eddie Russell partnered with Joy Spence, Master Blender at Appleton Estate, to bring this bold vision to life. Jamaican rum casks impart an exotic richness to the whiskey, adding layers of flavor that complement Wild Turkey's trademark boldness. Now, let’s set sail on this sensory journey. Nose: A Sweet, Fruity Breeze with Rich Oak Anchors As you bring the glass to your nose, you’re immediately hit with a warm wave of tropical fruit—ripe bananas, pineapple, and a splash of citrus. But it’s not all fruit on the nose. There’s a solid undercurrent of deep, rich oak that keeps things grounded. That oak brings out subtle notes of vanilla, caramel, and even a little bit of toasted coconut. The rum influence is unmistakable, but the bourbon backbone remains strong, reminding you of its Kentucky roots. This is a whiskey with layers, and they all play nicely together. Palate: A Full-Bodied Blend of Spice and Sweet On the palate, *Voyage* really shows its wild side. The rich oak from the nose becomes more dominant, delivering a beautifully robust flavor. You get those classic bourbon notes like caramel, vanilla, and spice, but the rum cask adds a fascinating twist. There’s a molasses sweetness that mingles with brown sugar and tropical fruits like mango and banana. The wood spices—cinnamon and nutmeg—dance around the edges, keeping your taste buds on high alert. It’s a complex, full-bodied sip with waves of flavor that ebb and flow. Finish: Long and Warming with an Oak-Driven Kick The finish is where *Voyage* truly comes into its own. It’s long, warm, and full of character. Those rich oak notes are ever-present, but they’re not overpowering. Instead, they’re balanced by a lingering sweetness from the rum cask, creating a finish that feels like an extended vacation in the tropics—minus the sunburn. There’s also a hint of earthy spice that leaves a nice tingle on the tongue as it fades, beckoning you back for another sip. Mouthfeel: Smooth Sailing with a Silky Texture Voyage delivers a velvety smooth mouthfeel, gliding across your palate like a well-oiled ship. It’s rich and viscous without being heavy, making each sip a luxurious experience. The rum finish gives it a slightly thicker texture than your standard bourbon, but that only adds to the intrigue. It feels like sipping liquid silk, with just enough bite to remind you it’s still bourbon at heart. Fool Proof Rating: 90% Wild Turkey Master’s Keep Voyage is a daring and delicious detour into rum-finished bourbon. The rich oak plays perfectly with the tropical sweetness of the rum cask, creating a well-balanced, complex whiskey that will make you want to take your taste buds on a round-the-world cruise. With each sip, it reveals new depths of flavor, proving that sometimes, it’s good to leave shore and explore the unknown. A definite must-try for adventurous bourbon lovers! - Discover the Best Wheated Bourbons | A List of High and Low-Priced Options
What is a Wheated Bourbon? If you're a bourbon fan, you may have heard the term "wheated bourbon" pop up in conversation occasionally. But what exactly does that mean? A wheated bourbon is one that uses wheat as the secondary grain in its mash bill, instead of the more common rye. This results in a smoother, sweeter flavor profile compared to the spicier, more robust taste of rye-heavy bourbons. In fact, some of the most famous and beloved bourbons in the world are wheated, like Maker's Mark and Pappy Van Winkle. The exact mash bill for a wheated bourbon can vary from distillery to distillery, but in general, it contains at least 51% corn and a combination of wheat and malted barley to round out the mixture. So next time you're sipping on a wheated bourbon, you'll know exactly what makes it so good. The Best Wheated Bourbons | Hard to Find, Allocated Options If you're into bourbon, you know that finding a rare bottle of allocated wheated bourbon is like striking gold. And believe me, the hunt is totally worth it. As someone who has searched high and low, I can assure you that the five wheated bourbons on my list, while hard to find are well worth the effort. When you sip on a glass of one of these bottles, you'll understand why people will do just about anything to get their hands on them. Whether you're a collector or just a bourbon lover, trust me when I say these allocated wheated bourbons are an experience you won't forget. So, if you are lucky and happen to spot one of these rare bottles in a liquor store, at a good price, don't think twice - snatch it up and savor every last drop. William Larue Weller Bourbon William Larue Weller is uncut, unfiltered, and hand-bottled, as were the previous vintages. Distilled from Kentucky corn North Dakota wheat and malted barley, it's a sour-mash wheated bourbon whiskey that was bottled at a cask strength after spending more than 12 years in #4 char American oak casks. Creamy with cherry, cocoa, herbal, and oak notes, it's a well-aged, powerful, yet perfectly balanced whiskey. William Larue Weller is my personal favorite and in my opinion, is one of the best wheated bourbons available. I would purchase William Larue Weller over any of the Pappy Van Winkle products. Even though they are from the same mash bill the high/barrel proof really makes this whiskey shine. Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 15 Year Bourbon If you're a whiskey connoisseur, you've likely heard of the famous "Pappy". And if you haven't tried their 15-year-old yet, you're missing out. This particular bottle of Pappy Van Winkle bourbon packs a punch with its 107-proof and has a bolder flavor profile than the 20 and 23-year-old iterations. I think it's the perfect balance of sweetness, oak, and spice, making it my favorite of the Pappy Van Winkle line. And while the Pappy Van Winkle 20 year and the Pappy Van Winkle 23 year old varieties may be more coveted, there's something to be said about the complexity and intensity of the 15 year old. If you need some great whiskey glasses I highly recommend this Glencairn Set and the Libbey Signature Kentucky Bourbon Trail set below. These are my go-to glasses for whiskey tasting. Weller 12 Year Bourbon Crafted at the Buffalo Trace distillery, W.L. Weller is a wheated bourbon brand beloved by its numerous fans, it's made in homage to one of bourbon's original aristocrats. Aged for a minimum of 12 years, the spirit features an expertly balanced classic bourbon profile. It has garnered several of the most prestigious awards, including a Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. If you like a smooth and easy drinker this is the one for you. Old Fitzgerald 15 Year Every spring and fall, a new edition of the Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond series gets released. It takes inspiration from an original 1950's Old Fitzgerald diamond decanter, honoring both the brand's history and the Bottled-in-Bond designation. This bourbon has a rich distilling pedigree, dating back to 1884 when it was first registered. During Prohibition, it was sold to "Pappy" Van Winkle, and in 1999, Heaven Hill acquired the brand and started distilling it at Bernheim Distillery in Louisville, KY. Apart from the Decanter Series, they also offer other wheated Bourbons like Larceny Small Batch and Larceny Barrel Proof, carrying on the legacy of Old Fitzgerald. Old Fitzgerald has many other releases the 9-year-old, 11-year-old, 13-year-old, 15-year-old, 17-year-old, and 19-year-old are also great bottles. Larceny Barrel Proof Bourbon Just like how Heaven Hill handles its Elijah Craig Barrel Proof line, Larceny Barrel Proof will have limited releases three times a year - January, May, and September. Each release will feature different proofs and bourbon aged six to eight years. The batch name's first character indicates the batch of the year, followed by the numeral representing the release month, and the last two digits refer to the release year. Maker's Mark 46 Maker's 46 is Made from a mash of corn, wheat, and malted barley, and is aged in limestone cellars and handcrafted in small batches. Maker's Mark is one of the few distilleries that rotate their barrels from the upper to the lower levels of the aging warehouses during the aging process. This ensures that the barrels get equal treatment, evening out the differences in temperature fluctuation that occurs during the maturation process. This is the first new Makers Mark recipe in at least five decades. Makers 46 is Makers Mark with a French Twist. Maker's 46 is the original Maker's Mark but aged for an extended period in seared French oak staves. The staves were sourced from the Independent Stave Company, which experimented with 10 virgin French oak staves, testing several different levels of sear to caramelize the wood sugars and seal in the bitter tannins of the oak. The final staves, labeled Profile 46, were then added to the barrels of the original Maker's Mark, and aged in Makers limestone bourbon cellars. The French oak staves create a smoother, bolder, more complex flavor profile, imparting more spice, sweetness, and vanilla onto the spirit. Bottled at a solid 47% ABV. This bourbon has a similar flavor profile to the sought-after Weller Special Reserve, Weller Antique 107, and Weller 12 year. The result is a delicious and complex flavor profile that truly raises the bar. The cask strength gives this spirit a smooth and warming finish, with notes of vanilla and caramel that linger long after the last sip. If you love Maker's 46, be sure to try the cask strength variation for a truly elevated experience. Larceny Very Special Small Batch Bourbon Larceny Small Batch Bourbon is a tribute to the exquisite palate of John E. Fitzgerald, Julian Pappy Winkle, and Old Fitzgerald; crafted from corn, wheat, malted barley, and rye. Distilled with limestone water and an exclusive yeast strain, it boasts a rare flavor profile of citrus notes, stone fruits, and butterscotch candy. Master Distillers handpicked the spirit to resemble a six-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey -- distinguished by its use of wheat as the secondary grain instead of rye. At 46% ABV, Larceny Very Special Small Batch makes for a smoother drinking experience. Old Elk Wheated Bourbon Old Elk Distillery is a family-owned distillery founded in 2013 in Fort Collins, Colorado. The label is a collaboration with Master Distiller Greg Metze of MGP, who has over 40 years of experience in whiskey development. They were named Colorado “Distillery of the Year” by the New York International Spirits Competition for two consecutive years (2016-2017). Their Slow Cut proofing process produces a smoother and more balanced bourbon by allowing the flavors to mingle over multiple weeks. Their Straight Wheated Bourbon expression has a mash bill of 51% corn, 45% wheat, and 4% malted barley and is aged for at least 5 years before being bottled at 92 proof. It has won a Gold Medal at both the New York International Spirits Competition as well as from the Beverage Testing Institute. Jefferson's Ocean Wheated Mashbill Voyage 29 This bourbon starts its journey in the Port of Savannah, enduring turbulent sea storms and extreme temperature fluctuations. As a result, the bourbon acquires unique flavors influenced by its rocking voyage. The torrid heat caramelizes the sugar, enhancing the sweetness, while the salty sea air imparts a briny undertone to the barrel. The end product is a deeper and more complex bourbon, clocking in at 90 proof. By replacing rye with wheat, the savory and briny taste of bourbon is allowed to flourish, resulting in a softer and more subtle flavor profile. Delicate hints of vanilla from the wood, along with the natural sweetness from the corn, further contribute to the complexity and richness of this bourbon. This is a little gimmicky but still results in a solid bourbon. Start Your Home Bar Starting a home collection of Bourbon can seem intimidating, but with this great list of wheated bourbons, anyone will be able to find one that suits their taste. Crafted for multidimensional flavors and versatility, each pick is sure to provide an enjoyable experience and leave a memorable, long-lasting impression that only bourbon can impart. Lee revolutionized the bourbon world by creating a single-barrel version named after former distillery president Colonel Blanton, who would often handpick special barrels from Warehouse H to share with others. Fast-forward decades later and you have one of the most established award-winning bourbons on the market - Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbons. Blanton's Straight from the Barrel is a single-barrel bourbon produced by the Buffalo Trace Distillery. The secret lies in the proprietary sour Mash Bill #2 used in its production, which uses a high rye ratio (12%-15%). This same mash bill is used by Buffalo Trace for all of Blanton's products, Elmer T. Lee and Rock Hill Farms as well as a few others. This particular mash bill gives the bourbon a distinct and slightly spicy flavor profile that sets it apart from other bourbons. The Buffalo Trace Distillery is known for its attention to detail and craftsmanship, which is reflected in the quality of Blanton's Straight from the Barrel. Blanton's Straight from the barrel takes everything that is good about the original Blanton's Bourbon and just makes it better! With a 128.8-proof rating, this limited-edition spirit is highly sought-after among connoisseurs everywhere for its robust flavor profile that definitely impressed me. Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon is a solid choice for any bourbon drinker, but if you're looking for something truly special, the Straight from the Barrel is a must have. As someone who has tried the original and found it a bit lacking in terms of flavor and excitement, the Straight from the Barrel version is bold and packed with flavor. The balance of flavors is remarkable, with tasting notes of vanilla, caramel, and oak all present in perfect harmony. While I'm not here to push you towards any particular brand, I would highly recommend giving this one a try if you're a fan of bourbon. This bottle of Blantons Straight from the Barrel single barrel bourbon from the Buffalo Trace Distillery was taken from warehouse H, rick number 14, barrel number 67, and was dumbed 10-19-2020 Nose The first step in experiencing Blanton's Straight from the Barrel is to indulge in the olfactory pleasure it provides. Upon nosing the whiskey, you are greeted with a strong presence of caramel, vanilla, and dark chocolate. The sweetness of the caramel and vanilla, along with the subtler notes of black cherry, is beautifully balanced with just a hint of heat that manages to cut through the sweetness without being overpowering. Palate Indulgence in flavor is where Blanton's Straight from the Barrel shines. The palate is greeted with a rich, complex symphony of dark chocolate, caramel, and vanilla, with a delightful spice from the cinnamon and a faint, beckoning smokiness from the toasted oak. The initial sip may feel a touch hot on the tongue, but the heat quickly subsides, leaving you to explore the layers of flavor in this big, bold whiskey. Finish The finish of a bourbon is an ode to its character, and Blanton's Straight from the Barrel delivers with a final act that echoes the notes of dark chocolate, vanilla, and the tannic endnote of dry oak. The finish is long and languorous, deserving of the time and attention to fully appreciate as it lingers on the palate. Feel It has a highly viscous feel with a nice, warm mouth coating. Overall Blanton's Straight from the Barrel stands as a testament to the art of bourbon making, offering an experience that is as rich and complex as its flavor profile. From the initial aroma to the lingering finish, every sip invites you into a world of exquisite tastes and textures. Its warming embrace and intricate layers of flavor make it not just a drink, but an adventure for the senses. Whether you're a seasoned connoisseur or new to the world of bourbon, this Blanton's expression is an exceptional choice that promises to deliver satisfaction in every drop. In sum, it encapsulates everything that makes bourbon beloved around the world: tradition, complexity, and a timeless quality that beckons you back for another taste. Other Buffalo Trace bourbons that use the same proprietary sour mash bill #2 as Blantons Straight from the Barrel include Blanton's Single Barrel, Blanton's Gold Edition, Rock Hill Farms, and Elmer T. What is Rye Whiskey If you're a whiskey aficionado or just a casual drinker who is curious about the different types of whiskey, then rye whiskey might be one that you've heard of. Rye whiskey is similar to bourbon, but it's made with at least 51% rye grain instead of corn. This gives it a spicy, sometimes fruity flavor that sets it apart from other types of whiskey. It's been around since the colonial days when American farmers were growing rye crops abundantly. In fact, George Washington himself even operated a rye whiskey distillery. Rye whiskey has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years as more people try to switch up their whiskey preferences and explore new flavors. Pikesville Straight Rye Whiskey Crafted by Heaven Hills Co-Master Distiller Denny Potter, Pikesville Straight Rye Whiskey is an exceptional creation. It combines rye, corn, and barley to deliver the distinctive spiciness reminiscent of traditional Maryland rye whiskies. What sets it apart is the careful selection of six-year-old barrels from high-storage, plus setting the proof just right to amplify the delightful barrel character without overpowering the spicy grain notes. This results in Pikesville Straight Rye Whiskey, boasting a captivating pale copper color and an enticing aroma of dark cocoa and burnt oak. When you take a sip, you'll be immersed in layers of honey, clover, and white chocolate, leading to a memorable finish highlighted by hints of vanilla bean, butterscotch candy, maple syrup, and caramel. It's no wonder that Pikesville Rye Whisky earned a well-deserved Double Gold at the 2015 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and an impressive 95 points at the 2015 Ultimate Spirits Challenge. This one is probably the best rye whiskey for the money and a great place to start if you are new to the world of rye whiskey. Russell's Reserve Rye Whiskey Russell's Reserve 6-Year-Old Small Batch Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey is made using a generations-old recipe. The rye is distilled at a lower proof than other Kentucky distilleries, resulting in less water dilution before maturation. Aged for a minimum of six years in heavily charred American oak casks, the unique maturation process contributes bold flavors of honey, wood tannins, and cinnamon, complementing the spicy rye notes. The individual casks are carefully hand-selected by Russell and his son, Eddie, who have over 90 years of combined whiskey-making experience. Finally, the whiskey is bottled by hand after reaching the desired proof. This exceptional rye whiskey has been recognized with a Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, earning the title of "Best Rye Whiskey," and receiving an outstanding score of 96-100 points from Wine Enthusiast. If you need some great whiskey glasses, I highly recommend this Glencairn Set and the Libbey Signature Kentucky Bourbon Trail set below. These are my go-to glasses for whiskey tasting. Larceny Very Special Small Batch Bourbon Leveraging his distilling know-how and political clout, Taylor, along with Treasury Secretary John G. Carlisle, played a critical role in the creation and adoption of the Bottled-In-Bond Act of 1897. This pivotal legislation imposed strict regulations on spirits bearing the "Bonded" or "Bottled-in-Bond" designation, ensuring they came from a single distiller, at one distillery, within one distillation season. Additionally, it stipulated that such spirits must mature in a federal bond warehouse for at least four years under the watchful eye of the U.S. government and be bottled at exactly 100 proof. The Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Straight Rye Whiskey bottled in bond pays homage to its namesake's legacy, crafted exclusively from rye and malted barley—completely omitting corn. This yields a drink highlighted by an array of dark spices, elegantly offset by subtle caramel tones. Each bottle of this 100-proof, bonded spirit is sealed with the richness of a dry, oak-laden finish, accented with hints of cinnamon and vanilla. The presentation is equally nostalgic, featuring vintage labeling and an antique-style canister that harkens back to the packaging Taylor pioneered over a century ago. They both are great for nosing and help in discerning more subtle notes. Founded in 2008 at an old farm in Shoreham, Vermont, WhistlePig quickly rose to fame as the world's most-awarded rye whiskey maker. Until his passing in 2018, the WhistlePig farm had been home to the founding father of craft whiskey, Master Distiller Dave Pickerell. Today, they are all about protecting what makes rye whiskey great, and at the same time innovating to make it better. Their Double Malt expression features their oldest rye whiskey that was mellowed for 18 years. After years of devotion to patient aging and innovative blending, WhistlePig has turned its attention to experimenting with grain, namely the practice of malting rye, reflected in the 1st Edition of the Double Malt. Distilled from a mash bill of 79% rye, 15% malted rye, and 6% malted barley, it's a truly flavorful whiskey where the boldness and peppery spice of the rye combine perfectly with the softer earthy and floral notes of the malted rye, while the malted barley provides richness and sweetness. This is a complex and elegant sipper that's bottled at 92 proof. Nose WhistlePig 18 year rye whiskey has a unique aroma. It starts with a strong rye spice aroma with notes of toasted oak, baking spices, and subtle sweetness. The rye is the first thing to hit your nose when you take your first sniff, and it quickly fades into the other aromas like baking spices, toasted almonds, and oak. These secondary aromas are slightly sweet and very inviting. Each waft brings out more complexity from the combination of these aromas. WhistlePig 18 year rye whiskey has an aromatic profile that is enjoyable. The nose is nice but I am left thinking that it should be better for an 18 year whiskey. Palate Whistlepig 18 year Whiskey has a complex blend of flavors. I notice a subtle sweetness along with hints of rye spice, clove, black pepper, and dry oak. The sip starts off subtly sweet but quickly transitions to a more spicy note. There’s a definite burst of rye spice that lingers on the palate, along with clove and a pleasant tingle of black pepper. Finally, the dry oak notes come through in the finish, leaving behind an inviting aftertaste. All in all, this is a well-rounded whiskey. It also drinks a little hotter than I would expect for 92 proof, which I like. I think if this were 100 proof I would like it better. Finish The finish is medium to long, with lots of rye spice and oak. It’s a well-balanced whiskey. The oak notes fade slowly, leaving behind a pleasant sweetness from the rye. There's also a bit of heat on the palate that gives it some depth and dimension. Feel The mouth feel of WhistlePig 18 year is oily, with a medium coating that lingers with each sip. It begins quite smooth on the palate but quickly builds in intensity, giving it more heft and body. The oiliness of the rye gives it a velvety texture that blends together all of its flavors. Its medium mouth coating creates an enjoyable finish without being too heavy or overpowering. All in all, this 18 year old whiskey has an excellent balance between its smoothness and warmth that I enjoyed. Final Thoughts With an 87% Fool Proof rating this is a very good whiskey that I enjoyed it quite a bit. It is complex yet very easy to drink. The problem is that it cost $399. That is a bit steep! At this price point, it is up against some of the top whiskeys in the world and I would say it's not quite there for me. It is still a great bottle to have on your shelf. The box that it comes in is very nice and the bottle is beautiful. I especially like the custom-made glass bottle stopper that comes with it. The stopper weighs a ton and looks great! If you have the money to spare then this bottle is definitely worth grabbing! All in all, WhistlePig 18 year old rye whiskey is an excellent addition to any collection and I highly recommend trying it Use my exclusive Caskers.com discount code: WHISKEYFOOL10 to receive $10 off qualifying* orders. - Best Bourbon Under $30 | My Top 5 Classic, Budget Friendly Bourbons, and More
I have compiled a list of my top 5, budget-friendly, bourbons from major distilleries. I am also including some lesser-known options that are also very good. This is a great list for beginners and experienced bourbon drinkers alike. I view these as home bar essentials and I feel that all of these bourbons deserve a place on everyone's shelf. Wild Turkey 101 is My All-Time Favorite Classic Bourbon Under $30 Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon is crafted using a high-rye mash bill, which gives the bourbon a unique and spicy flavor profile. Once the bourbon has been distilled, it is aged in American oak casks that have been charred with a #4 char. Typically, the degree of charring within a cask is measured on a scale of one to four, with a #1 char referring to casks that have been lightly toasted, and a #4 char referring to casks that have been charred so heavily that the interior resembles an alligator hide. After maturing for a minimum of five years, Wild Turkey 101 is bottled at 101 proof. The bourbon has an aroma of brown sugar and spice that give way to bold notes of caramel, vanilla, more spice, and notes of citrus and orange zest on the palate. The finish is intense and warming. Wild Turkey 101 has earned a score of 92 points from the Ultimate Spirits Challenge and the Gold Medal at the International Wine & Spirits Competition. Wild Turkey 101 has picked up a reputation of being "cheap" somewhere along the way. That could not be further from the truth. For me, it is the quintessential bourbon. This is always on my shelf. Great enjoyed neat and It is my go-to for making an Old Fashioned. Since it comes in at a nice 101 proof it holds up very well in any mixed drink. You can usually pick this up for around $22-24 at any local store. Wild Turkey 101 is a fantastic product and needs to be on every bourbon lovers shelf! At the time, the region was considered part of Virginia and was overseen by a military governor named John J. Bowman. In order to encourage westward expansion, Virginia issued pioneers who agreed to settle in Kentucky County "corn writs," which granted the pioneers 60 acres of land if they agreed to settle in Kentucky and start farming corn. One year after the defeat of the British, a Baptist minister named Elijah Craig emigrated to Fayette County (today, a part of the State of Kentucky) and purchased 1,000 acres of land in a town named Lebanon. In 1789, Craig built a distillery on his farm and is credited with being the first person to mature bourbon in charred, oak casks, earning him the title "Father of Bourbon Whiskey." Elijah Craig Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey pays homage to Craig and his unique legacy. The bourbon is bottled from the marriage of fewer than 100 casks of maturing bourbon, each of which is rested in a Kentucky rick house for a minimum of a dozen years. The bourbon has an aroma of honey, sweet corn, vanilla, and brown sugar. The aroma gives way to notes of roasted nuts, creamy vanilla, molasses, and tropical fruits on the palate, which are well-balanced by hints of dry oak and cinnamon. The finish is long and sweet and ends with a warming touch. Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon earned a score of 95 points from Wine Enthusiast, which called the bourbon "mellow" and said that it had the flavor profile of "butterscotch candy." In addition, Jim Murray, author of the Whisky Bible, named the bourbon the "Best Bourbon Aged 10-12 Years," and stated that it is "one of my favorite five or six bourbons" in the world. Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon also earned the Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the WSWA Tasting Competition. Unfortunately, they have since removed the 12-year age statement and the bourbon is likely 7-8 years old now. Regardless, Elijah Craig Small batch is a bargain! At 94 proof it is still complex but also very easy to drink. I often recommend this one to beginners who are looking to expand into higher proof stuff. It's a good stepping stone. I usually enjoy this one neat. You can find this one on the shelf for around $22-25. Use my exclusive Caskers.com discount code: WHISKEYFOOL10 to receive $10 off qualifying* orders. Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is made from a mash of yellow #2 dent corn, plump rye grains, and malted barley, which is cooked and cooled before being fermented for approximately 3-5 days. Once fermentation is complete, the bourbon is double-distilled through column stills before being aged in first-fill, American oak barrels (90% of the distillery's oak is brought in from the Ozark Mountains) that have been aged for six months in the distilleries yard before being heavily charred. After spending at least eight years in these barrels, which are stored on the middle floors of the distillery's warehouses to encourage the greatest temperature fluctuations, no more than 40 barrels at a time are hand-selected to create one single, small batch of Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey won the Double Gold Medal in the 2014 New York World Wine & Spirits Competition and a Gold Medal in the 2014 International Wine & Spirits Competition. This one comes in at number 3 for me, only because I am a proof hound. Buffalo Trace is 90 proof and I love higher proof whiskey because it is often more complex with a more interesting flavor profile. As you begin to expand your palate the higher proof bourbons just can't be beaten. Buffalo Trace is also a great bourbon for beginners or those just starting their bourbon journey. If it's not sold out, you can pick this up for around $25. Unfortunately, it is often sold out and difficult to find in some areas. Five years later, the distillery released the first bottles of Makers Mark Bourbon Whisky, which featured the distillery's distinctive red wax seal. The distillery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and was listed as a National Historic Landmark in 1980. Made from a mash of corn, wheat, and malted barley, Makers Mark Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky (spelled without an e to honor the Samuels family's Scottish heritage) manages to marry large-scale, global production with a rich tradition in a way that few other distilleries can rival. The actual makers of Makers Mark still rotate the barrels in the distillery's warehouses, bottle the whisky, and dip the bottles in wax all by hand. Makers Mark Kentucky Straight Bourbon is highly distinct from the majority of other bourbons on the market which are made from a mash of malted barley, rye, and corn. Wheat serves as the replacement for rye in the recipe. This 'wheated' bourbon, is crafted from red winter wheat, and bottled at 90 proof. Maker Mark is an excellent introduction to wheated bourbon. Weller 107 is my favorite wheated bourbon but it has become impossible to find (more on that in a later article). The nose on Makers Mark is its most remarkable quality. Strong brown sugar, caramel, and vanilla notes really shine through. It reminds me of a homemade cinnamon roll. Those notes don't entirely come through on the palate, but it is still very enjoyable taken neat. It also makes a great mixer. This one is usually right at $30, but I do often see it on sale for $28 at many of the big box stores. Use my exclusive Caskers.com discount code: WHISKEYFOOL10 to receive $10 off qualifying* orders. The Gelncairn and the Libbey Signature are the ones I use for all of my tastings. Drink like a pro! Old Forester Signature 100 Proof Bourbon The Old Forester Signature 100 Proof Bourbon is a tribute to founder George Gavin Brown, carrying his signature on the label he would sign all the bottles himself in the olden days. It's made from a mash bill of 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley and bottled at 100 proof. It's a well-balanced affair with plenty of caramel, cherry, and oaky spice, along with some coffee and chocolate on the nose. The rich palate adds to that some fruity notes, nuts, maple syrup, and caramel. Finishes spicy and complex with pepper, cloves, nutmeg, and oak. This is a much better iteration than the Classic Old Forester 86 proof which I do not recommend. However, this Old Forester Signature 100 Proof is a very nice bourbon when you consider the price. This one is also able to be enjoyed neat. It is a staple of many bars and is also a great bourbon for mixed drinks. The price has started to come up on this one. You can find it at big box stores for around $29 and is often on sale for $23 here in Indiana. If you're gonna pick this one up, make sure you get the 100 proof and not the 86 proof...big difference! They both are great for nosing and help in discerning more subtle notes. In-Depth Review of Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof Tennessee Whiskey Let's dive into my review of Jack Daniel's - a bottle I've ignored for far too long. As someone who isn't a big fan of Jack Daniel's, I was pleasantly surprised when I finally decided to give this Tennessee Whiskey a try. You might be wondering, is it really a bourbon? Technically, no. But, it does meet all the criteria to be called one. The upper-level barrels carefully chosen by Jack Daniel's master distiller produce Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof. Unlike the watered-down 94-proof single-barrel whiskey, this offering is bottled at a higher proof between 125 and 140. Handmade toasted and charred American oak barrels contribute to the maturation process, infusing this robust and smooth whiskey with distinctive flavors of vanilla and toasted oak. The intensity of these flavors is elevated due to the higher proof. The palate is beautifully balanced with notes of sweet brown sugar and finishes with a toasted oak. Jasper Newton Jack Daniel, born on September 5, 1850, was the youngest of ten children. Both of his parents had Scottish and Irish heritage. In 1864, Jack learned the art of whiskey making from a preacher and an enslaved man named Nathan Nearest Green, who later became the head distiller of the Jack Daniel Distillery. The distillery, established in Lynchburg, Tennessee in 1866, became the first registered distillery in the country (at that time, distilleries were required to register with the federal government, and the Jack Daniel Distillery was assigned Registered Distillery Number 1). The bottle I am tasting comes from Barrel House 3-08, barrel number 23-10544 and was bottled on 12-8-23. Nose Let's start with the nose. I immediately picked up on the scent of vanilla bean ice cream, which was unexpected. Then I noticed a hint of dark chocolate-covered banana, which gave it a slightly fruity and sweet aroma. This was followed by notes of rich and smokey toasted oak. The combination was great and made it hard not to take a sip right then and there. Palate Now, onto the palate. The first thing I noticed was the buttery vanilla flavor, followed by rich butterscotch and brown sugar. It was like a dessert in a glass. But what really stood out to me was the leather and smoke notes. They gave the whiskey a depth and complexity that was truly unique. The toasted oak flavor tied it all together. Finish As for the finish, it was long and lingering. The dry vanilla flavor mixed with the leather and smoke, created an unforgettable taste. I could still taste it long after the last sip.
